Using the Wi-Fi Certificate Enroller

If your wireless carrier enables Wi-Fi on your device, you can use the certificate enroller to help secure your wireless connection. This is mainly use for people who want to use wireless connection at their work places. You normally do not need to use this if you are connecting to a wireless connection to your home router or at free wireless hotspots.

Notes

You must be connected to a computer by using a USB cable for this process.

Step 1

Tap Start > Connections tab > Wireless LAN.

Step 2

Tap the Enroll tab.

Step 3

Enter the user name, password, and server as applicable.

Step 4

Tap Retrieve Certificate. A message appears that states that the certificate has been added successfully.

Wifi Connections Problems

Many Omnia users will have met with Wi-Fi Connections problems. The latest Firmware DZIA5 will have get rid of all these problems. You should be able to connect to your home network or wireless hotspots without any drop connections. Users has related this drop connections to the firmware as DZIA5 has given them more stable Wifi connections.

Problem #1: Omnia uses GPRS or WAP By Default Instead of Wifi For Browsing
Please give some time and ensure that your Omnia has been connected to your home network or wireless hotspots before starting to surf internet. If not, the browser on Omnia will pull the URL using GPRS instead of the Wifi. You will incurr data charges if you are not on a data plan.

Problem #2: YouTube uses GPRS to stream Videos
You connected to the url, http://m.youtube.com via your home network. But the moment you click Watch Video and the Streaming Player starts, it will connect to the GPRS to download the video. This is a common problem and is due to some settings problems.

There are two things to take note to ensure the Streaming Player will use my Wifi instead of the GPRS to stream videos. 

1. Streaming Player
Go to Menu - Options and in Connect via, select My Work Network. You also need to set the UDP Port Range to access 1024 to 65534.

2. Wifi Access Point
Ensure that your wireless access point settings, Connects to Work instead of The Internet.

Problem #3: Omnia is hot using Wifi or GPRS
It is common to find that your Omnia is very hot after using the GPRS or Wifi after 15 to 30 minutes. This is a common issues every Omnia users find and it is not a problem with your Omnia. the only way to resolve the heat is to off your Wifi and GPRS and stop surfing. I think that Samsung must have a label to warn users about this but if they do it, then this will be a disadvantage for them over other Windows Mobile Phones. Samsung choose to act quiet on this issue and most review websites also choose not to talk about this issue.

 

How to check Omnia Lock or Unlocked?

Omnia Phones sold in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and many parts of Asia are unlocked. But many sold in other parts of the World like Europe and US are locked. I will show you a step on how to check what kinds of lock are active on your Omnia.

Type the following into your dialer

*#7465625# 

If your Omnia is locked, you will need the 8 digit unlock code and it is different for all Omnia depending on your IMEI number and the mobile operator. You need to get the unlock code for free or purchasing it from an unlock site. Check your IMEI Number by keying in *#06# into your dialer.

The mobile operator can also unlock it for you by informing them your IMEI Number. But the trick is that they do not it for you so easily. You need to tell them you need the unlock code because you have to travel overseas for work or leisure or change SIM Card.

Once you obtain the unlock code, note it down so that you will lost it.

Insert the locked SIM Card to your Omnia and enter one of the following depending on your active lock.

Wireless Network Connection Failed

Most of the wireless network used at home and free hotspots are using 802.11g. There are now new broadband router now using 802.11n especially if you got it free from your Starhub Maxonline Plan. In Singapore and Malaysia, most broadband users are using Linksys, Dlink and Belkin.

Omnia is able to connect to wireless routers using 802.11g. There are some Omnia users who are unable to connect to this type of wireless router as their Omnia has been set to use 802.11B by default. Go download & install trial version of SKTools into Omnia, then run Tune Up! and select Network tab (at the bottom), you will see 'WLAN 802.11G support = NO', change it to YES will do. You can also configure your wireless router to use 802.11B & G.

Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G

You can set your wirless router to used both 802.11B and 802.11G. Go to Wireless > Basic Wireless Settings and select Wireless Network Mode and choose Mixed. For advanced users, you can also set to use it for B or G only.

Setup Wi-Fi on your Omnia

You need to setup your Wi-Fi network before you can use it on your Omnia for surfing the internet.
Go to Main Menu > Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi

Configure Wireless Network
Click on the Search for Network(Fig 1) and it will search for the Wi-Fi Network within range of the Omnia. After the Access Point(Fig 2) are found, click on your Network Access Point Name.

It will prompt you to configure your Wireless Network. You should see your Access Point Name(Fig 3) in the Network name. Choose The Internet in the drop down box for Connects to: section. Click on Next.

Configure Network Authentication
In the Authentication(Fig 4) set it to Open in the drop down box. My Network is protected by the WEP Key and therefore I will choose WEP in Data Encryption. If your network is not secured, you will choose Disabled in the Data Encryption.

Ensure the check box for The key is automatically provided is unchecked. You will then be able to enter your WEP Key in the Network Key Box. Choose 1 for the Key index.
For Secure Network, you can only choose WEP Key for security in order for Omnia to use your Wi-Fi Network.
Click on Next.

You do not need to check the box for
Use IEEE 802.1x network access control(Fig 5) 
Click on Finish.

It will connect to your Wi-Fi Network. It will show Connected beside your Access Point Name if successful. You can now start surfing your Omnia using the Wi-Fi Network.

Please ensure that the Omnia works with Router that have the 802.11b or 802.11g signals. Some new routers may be using 802.11n signals only and disable the 802.11b and 802.11g signals.
