Play YouTube Videos on Omnia

Many Omnia users are trying very hard to let the Omnia play YouTube Videos. Most of the time it will open up the Touch Player to stream the video. You will then get a disppointing message of time out error. I have manage to use the Core Player to stream all my YouTube Videos.

First of all visit YouTube Mobile on your Omnia using Opera Browser.
Key in http://m.youtube.com in the url.

Select the YouTube Video that you want to watch

It will bring you to the Video page just like I have select to watch World Water Day Video from charity:water. I will click on the Watch Video and it will stream the YouTube Video using Core Player. Now I can enjoy my YouTube Videos with my Omnia. 

Check CorePlayer Settings
If you are unable to stream YouTube Videos on Core Player, please ensure you are using Core Player V1.2.5 Build 4506 or above.

Another thing to check is the File Association Settings.
Click on Menu - Tools - Preferences... - Select Page - File associations
Please ensure that you have check the boxes for RTP and RTSP Protocol in the File Association Page.

This protocol is important as it allow you to stream YouTube Videos on CorePlayer.

Disable Keypad Lock during Calls

Omnia will automatically enabled the Key Lock during call. Samsung Technical Support is unwilling to tell customer how to disable this fuction. But they have hint to Omnia Commuity on what to do and not to do in the registry. There are two methods to work around, one is in a Mortscript and another an exe file.

The registry key involved is HKLM\System\State\Touchlock .
Set to 0 -> screen enabled, set to 1 -> screen locked
Editing the registry do not help as it will automatically set to 1 after a call is connected. They have built the function in SECDialer.dll unless you hack this dll file. 
The program will set it to 1 to lock when you are making a call and set it to 0 when you press the Action Key to ulock.

Installing a MorScript File
You can install a morscript file to get around this Key Lock. The morscript will check when the phone program is running and resets the registry value to 0 after the phone program sets it to 1.
The morscript will continue to run until the next soft reset or when you power off your phone. I am not sure how this will affect the battery life on your Omnia. You may try and see whether it have an big impact on your battery life.

Using the MorScript File
1. Extract the MorScript.exe and No_screenlock.mscr to your Omina. 
2. Run the Morscript.exe
3. Run the No_screenlock.mscr

Installing a EXE File
Another way to overcome this is to install a EXE File. it will disable the screen lock every time it turns ON. You just need to extract the EXE file and put it on your Omnia. Run the EXE file and if you do not want it just delete the EXE file from your Omnia.

3G Network Availability

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the third-generation 3G mobile telecommunications technologies. In Singapore, UMTS operators like Singtel, M1 and Starhub use the 850 MHz and/or 1900 MHz bands for their 3G Network. Upload and download of data are quite fast using this 3G Network.
 

UMTS bands are 2100 for Europe, 850/1900 for AT&T in the US and 1700/2100 for T-Mobile in the US. Quad Band UMTS would be 850/1700/1900/2100.

Some Omnia USA user have ask why two different UMTS band? 
The most common answer was that AT&T does not want customers to jump over to T-Mobile. This maybe the main reason why they use competely different brand. 
But in my country, Singapore every mobile operator use the same frequency band as requires by the authority. This is to ensure that the mobile subscribers can switch between networks with ease.

GSM Network band
You can use the following website to check which countries use 3G network with GSM 850/1900 or GSM 900/1800. It also show whether 3G network is available in which countries.

Network Available on Omnia
You can check what Frequency Band you have on your Omnia.
Enter the code *#2263# on your dial pad.
It should bring up a list of available frequency band for your Omnia. 

The specific frequency bands originally defined by the UMTS standard are 1885–2025 MHz for the mobile-to-base (uplink) and 2110–2200 MHz for the base-to-mobile (downlink). In the US, 1710–1755 MHz and 2110–2155 MHz will be used instead, as the 1900 MHz band was already utilized. While UMTS2100 is the most widely-deployed UMTS band, some countries' UMTS operators use the 850 MHz and/or 1900 MHz bands (independently, meaning uplink and downlink are within the same band), notably in the US by AT&T Mobility, in Singapore by Singtel and in Australia by Telstra.

For existing GSM operators, it is a simple but costly migration path to UMTS: much of the infrastructure is shared with GSM, but the cost of obtaining new spectrum licenses and overlaying UMTS at existing towers is high.

SPB Mobile Shell Themes

There are many Themes available for SPB Mobile Shell so that you can change the outlook of your Omnia. Get it to look like HTC, iPhone, Omnia or many others created by the Theme Designers.

 

In this customization, I get the look of HTC and made my icons to look like Omnia. You can do lots of customization on the Themes.
You must have installed the SPB Mobile Shell on Omnia before installing the Themes.

Installing the SPB Mobile Shell Theme

• Download the Themes for SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.0
• Unzip the file.
• Copy SpbMobileShellSkins to My Storage
• Open File Explorer on your Omnia
• Go to 'My Storage\SpbMobileShellSkins\Scripts'
• Run Mortscipt.exe
• Run 'Install_WQVGA.mscr'
• Set your language
• Answer YES in next question to install all Themes

You can start to customize your Omnia as you will guided through a series of pages to setup your Omnia Themes. You can change the Theme by going to Tools and select Spb Skins 3.0. Choose the Theme you want and it will load the customizer up for you.

Manila 2D Themes

There are many Themes available for the Manila 2D. You can stored all the Themes on your My Storage or Storage Card and change the Themes as you like. A piece of software called M2DC is needed to change the Themes.

Getting Themes for Manila 2D
The Themes for Manila 2D is easily found on the internet for use on your Omnia. Many Manila 2D Themes are available in cab, zip and M2DCT format. Copy the Themes you download onto a Theme folder that you can create anywhere on My Storage or the Storage Card.
Remember Theme file are having the cab, zip or M2DCT Format.

I will include a Nissian Theme here for you to use on your M2DC Customizer to try it out.

Changing Manila 2D Themes

1. Launch the M2DC Application
2. Click on the Add button
3. Find the Theme where you store 
4. Click on the Theme File
5. The Skin is added
6. Click on Apply Theme

The software will update the Themes for you. As you can see changing the Themes is easy with the M2DC software.

Assign Ringtone to Contacts

You can assign specific ring tone for each Contact so that you know who is calling. Most people will assign specific ring tone for their family and their boss at work. Follow the following steps to assign ring tone to contact.

1. Click Start - Programs
2. Click on Contacts
3. Click on the contacts you want to add the ring tone
4. Click on Menu and Edit
5. Scroll down to Ring Tone and click on it
6. Select the ring tone you like to assign
7. It will play the select ring tone
8. Click on OK

So the specific ring tone will play when that contact call you.

Click on Ring Tone to select tone.

Samsung Omnia DZIA5 Firmware

Samsung Omnia has finally launched the next Official Firmware on its website for Singapore.

This Omnia Firmware Update is available to all Samsung Omnia users in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.It is available for Operating System using Windows XP and Vista. Other countries may not get this latest update yet and may have to wait.

The file size is bigger this time at 230MB and should take less than 10 mins for Broadband Users. It will download 6 files to your Samsung Omnia. The last files will take 2 minutes to write to your Omnia. Please ensure your Samsung Omnia is at least 80% Charge before you update your firmware.

Backup your Samsung Omnia using the Active Syn(XP) and Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1(Vista) before updating your firmware.
Backup your My Storage as it will be deleted!

The latest Singapore Firmware Version is

The down side is it will delete your My Storage. Many users were caught off guard and did not backup the My Storage as previous firmware updater did not format the My Storage. The Firmware Updater should infor the user that My Storage will be deleted.
The best improvement in this Firmware is the Phone Memory. You now have more free memory on your Storage and Program. It still lose to Custom ROM but overall you still have more space to install programs and store essential files on Phone memory for Active Syn purposes.

Another great improvement is more Widgets are added to the Omnia.

   

More Widgets has been added to the Widget Bar on your Omnia. The Widgets includes several new icons like Google Search, Yahoo Search, Yahoo Stock Ticker and Accu Weather. There is also a Setting on the top of the Widget Bar which allowed you to choose the type of Widgets you want to display on your Widget Bar. You are able to disable the Widget that you do need to use.

Another new Touch Option has been introduce which is the Favorite Settings. You will be able to do some simple settings through this page like customizing your themes, change your ring tone, power save options and many others.
